On Wednesday, Sept. 4, Congressman Van Taylor (R-TX) visited the Guardian Plano offices to gain a better understanding of our presence in Texas and learn about the company, our products and our space in the insurance industry. Congressman Taylor, whose district includes the Plano area, toured the facility and engaged with various colleagues to learn about their roles and how it benefits our members.

Some topics that piqued particular interest were how Family Medical Leave provides job protection during significant life events, the increasing volume of Paid Family Leave policies being discussed and implemented across the country, how Short and Long Term Disability provide income replacement, and how Vocational Rehabilitation resources help facilitate employees returning to the workforce.

Director of Operational Effectiveness and Plano site lead Jesse Reach, Manager of Group Disability Claims Scott Anderson, and Government Affairs representative Jon Renfrew sat with Congressman Taylor to discuss policy issues affecting Guardian and the insurance industry as a whole. They also discussed various Guardian philanthropic efforts in the area such as colleague volunteering at Minnie’s Food Pantry, the Plano Animal Shelter, and Hurricane Harvey relief efforts.

“Congressman Taylor was thoroughly impressed with the work that we do here and the positive impact we have on families across the country,” said Jon Renfrew of Guardian’s Government Affairs office.

Government Affairs holds several site visits across the country each year, inviting local policymakers to tour the facilities and speak with Guardian colleague. Government Affairs builds briefing memos and the local office hosts the policymaker.

“The purpose of these visits is to reinforce Guardian’s relationship with the policymaker, familiarize them with who Guardian is and give them insight into the work that is done at our various locations,” said Alex Hula of Government Affairs. “It is important that local policymakers visit our facilities so we can brand Guardian as a local constituent.”
